Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate acceptable compression rate of JPEG2000 in long term archiving endoscopic images and pathologic images in EMR.

Materials and Methods: Each 10 images of Endoscopy and pathology. All images are compressed with rate of 1:5, 1:10, 1:20, 1:40 by JPEG2000 compression protocol. The pairs of original and compressed images were compared by endosopist or pathologist. We designed JPEG2000 viewing program for comparing two images in one monitor system for easy and quick evaluation. The observers performed comparing study with 2 mega pixel color LCD monitors.

Results: All endoscopic images with 1:10 compression had more than score 1 and were acceptable in diagnosis, and 8 case of 1:40 compression were not acceptable in diagnosis. All microscopic images with 1:20 compression had more than score 1 and were acceptable in diagnosis, and 3 case of 1:40 compression were not acceptable in diagnosis.

Conclusion: Clinically acceptable image compression rate of JPEG2000 in endoscopic images and microscopic images are 1:10 and 1:20.
